I've very excited about this. I love sci-fi covers. Throw a planet on a cover and even if the rest of it is "blah" I'd still love it. I think this one works really well for the story...and if you look under the BL in Blood, you'll see the phallic sort of shape of a space station LOL At least that's what it looked like to me. (again perfect for the story)

This story is scheduled for release on February 23rd. Hopefully by then, I'll have the second book in the series, Bloodlines, almost ready to submit.

The second book will delve more into the history of the Vorian people, and will probably be a bit more political, definitely longer. I'm really looking forward to writing it.

My first sale, Blood Bonds, has been languishing on my hard drive since it's original publisher closed their doors. I kept meaning to resubmit it somewhere, and just never got around to it. Yesterday, I forced myself to stop being lazy and sent it to Red Rose Publishing. Last night, I got a contract for it.

I'm very excited about that. To be honest, Blood Bonds was my first foray into the erotic romance market, and I admit, I still blush like a virgin whenever I read it. If people who knew me well read it, they'd think I was joking about being the author.

Since then I've ventured into other areas of erotic romance, but I still feel shocked when I read Blood Bonds. It's strange. Maybe it's like losing your virginity, or your first kiss. No matter how many years later, it seems like a surreal event.

Nano time again, and as usual, I haven't really given it much thought. What story from my list of ideas will I try and tackle this year? That's about as far as I get, then on November first, I get up and hum and haw over it until I pick one at random, which is usually a very un-flushed out plot nibblet, and then a week into Nano, I'm stumped.

That's the usual path I take. Will I spend the next six days attempting to change that? Maybe. I think I know what story I want to do, so at least I have that head start.

But the question is this...what snacks do I need to have stocked up in order to make it through NANO? Because, lets face it, the best way to procrastinate when you're stuck is to stand in the kitchen, opening all the cupboards, pretending you're hungry just to get away from the keyboard. When it gets really bad I start feeling like I should be scrubbing the toilet, but let's hope it doesn't get to that point this year. So, large stockpile of nibbles = finishing nano...that's my theory anyway.

So, snacks...a good mix of healthy and junk, a balance of salty and sweet and a steady supply of drinks. They have to be non-messy (love ketchup chips, but my keyboard would get pretty stained if I ate while typing), and they shouldn't require dishes because washing them would cut into writing time. Ideally, I'd have a little bar fridge (Hello Kitty if I could find one) under my desk stocked full of flavored water and a veggie tray with dip. I'd also have an electric kettle no more than five feet away, and a good supply of tea bags and flavored hot chocolate (After Eight and Coffee Crisp.)

A half dozen bags of chips, home made brownies, cookies and tarts in a variety of flavors...hmmm what else? Anyone have any ideas for good nano-ing snacks?

Oops!

Back in the spring, my brother informed me that my domain name had expired and he hadn't renewed it for me. I meant to renew it myself when I got back from visiting up north (where there isn't good internet) but forgot in the chaos of unloading all the kids junk. Now, the domain has been bought by someone else, so I'll have to renew it with .ca or some other version. This means going to my publishers and informing them of the change so they can update the link on their website. So not fun.

As for writing, not much of that going on lately. Between camping, the kids taking classes up north, and now this insane heat wave, (and planning for another camping trip) there hasn't been much time or brain space for it. I have started a new story. I'm not entirely sure where it's going right now, and I should probably take a bit of time to actually plot the darn thing out so I'm not just wandering aimlessly.

Last year when we were camping, a story idea hit me and I managed to write the first two chapters while sitting around the fire. (still not finished that story, BTW) this year, no similar inspiration struck. Maybe because this year when we went camping, there was less sitting around, and more doing things with our friends and all the kids. Hiking, swimming, touring the Algonquin Park visitor's center (and bookstore...) doesn't leave much time to just sit and write. Ah well.

iPad Apps for writers

Okay, I'm back with another post on apps for writers. Now that I've got an iPad, it's a bit easier to suggest what works and what just looks cool.

First, are two apps for tracking submissions to publishers. The first, TOTAL SUBMISSION is priced at $2.99 and has a very attractive visual layout. It's sort of like looking at a page in a notebook with stickie notes on it. Essentially, you enter in the story information (Title, word count genre and notes) and then you enter in all your prospective markets (Example, mine has Samhain Publishing, Loose ID etc) For the publisher, there's spaces to enter, Name, genre, word limit, status (open or closed) pay, responds in, editor, type (print/online/both) and address and notes.

Now, you've just sent out a submission, sending your story to Samhain. You tap the story title you sent, and the publisher you sent, then enter in the date...it will generate a date for when you should expect a response, and when you do get a response, you can change the status from Waiting, to YES!, Nope! or Withdrawn.

I have a few issues with this app. It's nice to see a list of all your submissions...but I have NO CLUE how the list is organized. It's not alphabetical, it's not sorted by sent date...it seems to be totally random. I would think they'd be sorted by either sent date, or status (ones you're waiting to hear about on top) but alas, that isn't so.

The second app is called STORYTRACKER, and is a bit more expensive at $6.99. It does all the same things as Total Submission, but it does sort the submissions by send date, and has the option of allowing you to enter in how much money you've made from a sale. This is a little hard to handle when you get monthly royalty checks, unless you're super on top of it, but if you are selling to magazines, it might be nice to see how much a story or article earned, first at each market, then in total. It's not as visually attractive, but it is easy to use and clearly shows what you need to know.

Both apps have a serious omission for authors who write longer works. When you write novellas or novels, you don't get paid by the word, line, paragraph, page or submission. You get royalties. Neither apps take this into account on the pop up menu for the pay section. It's not a huge deal, because you can enter the royalty rate in the notes section, but it's clear the designers were intending it to be used by people who write short stories or articles for magazines.

So, if you're a serious writer, and want to keep track of your submissions on your ipad/ipod/iphone these are both good choices. Another note, Total submission is only for ipad, where Storytracker is for all devices.

As always, if you have any good apps for writers, let me know. I'm always looking for something new to try and a new way to procrastinate.

What the summer brings

Summer is more than half way over and I have to confess, there’s been less camping than I’d hoped. We went once to a provincial park the first week of July, then on a canoe day trip a few days after that (got a great tramp stamp sunburn!)

What I did do was take a week long workshop on writing for kids and a lot of swimming.

I have managed to get inspired on an almost daily basis, so once the kids are both in school full time in September, I’ll hopefully be churning out stories at a rapid rate. I did write a novella this week. Doesn’t that sound nice? Wrote a novella this week, said with the same casual indifference one might use when saying you’ve washed the windows...in my case, i’m more likely to write a novella than wash windows though...might want to take a few hours and clean them now I think about it...

Where was I? No idea. Rambling again.

The ideal Writing Space

Everyone’s idea on this is different, but I thought I’d share my dream office with you since I’m sitting in my cluttered nook in a cold sunporch surrounded by all the crap that we don’t have storage place for.

1 - a big room. I know, you don’t need much space to write, but my ideal office would be big enough to house all my bookshelves as well. Mostly this is because if I have a room of my own, the hubby wouldn’t want me cluttering up the rest of the house with all my books. It also means research material is close at hand.

2 - A nice view. Right now I have a huge window looking out onto our driveway. I’ve prettied it up by putting a hummingbird feeder and some flowers nearby so it’s not so bad. Idealy, I’d have a house where I’m not staring at the neighbors living room window (I think they get creeped out when they see me sitting here, it would look like I’m spying on them or something.

3 - warm all year round. This room is seasonal. Mostly it’s freezing in winter and hotter than hell in summer. Spring and fall go back and forth between the two extremes. I don’t know about you, but I can’t type when my fingers are numb or when I have to wear gloves.

4 - A big white board and a big cork board for posting plot ideas and other important info. I tend to lose bits of paper, and have enough note books that searching through them all for one bit of info could be an all day exercise. Then again, if I just bothered to be organized.....

5 - A mini fridge - hey, this is my ideal! I’d also like a kettle and small stash of things like tea bags, hot chocolate, and healthy snacks so I don’t have to keep going into the kitchen...once you leave the office, you’re fair game for kids to ask for things. On that note...might need an ensuite bathroom too...

6 - A nice desk. I find that when you have a nice desk, you feel like what you’re doing is important and real...sitting at the dining room table or on a stack of milk crates does give the same sense of purpose. A desk that has drawers, nooks and shelves would be awesome.

I’m sure there are other things that would be great. Music, pictures to inspire, who knows. I’m sure a lot of us dream of having a space that’s just ours, our sanctuary where the real world isn’t allowed to intrude. The reality is, most of us have a desk in the family room (on a computer shared by the rest of the family) or in a room that is also serving other purposes.

What do you wish you had in a writing space? Already have an awesome office?

Warnings on E-book blurbs

Sometimes I think the warnings sell the book better than the blurb itself. A few years ago, a typical warning went something like this...“warning: contains explicit sexual content, use of toys and anal sex.”

Now, you’re more likely to see something like this warning from Erin Nicholas’ Just Right.

“Contains hot love in a dressing room, and the front seat of a car - at the expense of a very nice strawberry patch - oh and don’t forget the hooker boots.”

Here’s another example, this one is from Before the Storm by Marian Perera.

“Warning: contains violence, steam engines, steamer sex and multiple explosions of the unstable chemical variety.”

I didn’t read the blurb, but from the cover and the warning, it sounds like something I’d want to read.

Sasha White’s new release from Samhain, One Weekend, has a nice short one. “Warning: contains hot, sexy fun had by all-with all!” I think that says it all, right?

In fact, of the six new releases from Samhain this week, all have warnings, and only two of them aren’t humorous.

There’s no real point to this post, just that I found it interesting that the warnings sell me on a book better than a blurb.

If anyone has a favorite fun warning from a book, do share. I’d like to hear them.

NANOWRIMO and some ipod/iphone apps for writers

I know we are ages away fro Nano, but for some reason, it always creeps up on me. I was just browsing through the itunes store app section and came across an application called WriMo Demon. it’s free, and is essentially a word count tracking tool.

Now, I was wondering if it would work for other lengths. If so, it would be great for every day writing motivation....downloaded it, and yes, you can change the word count goal, but you can’t change the time...so it will always give you a month to complete your goal. It does calculate how many words you have to write in a day to reach your goal in 30 days though, and tells you the percentage you’ve completed, and your average word count per day. Could be useful.

STREAKS - a motivational tool that lets you mark on a calendar each day you reach your goal be it jogging, not smoking or writing...then keeps you informed of your success streaks...how long the current one is and your longest writing streak. Price was $1.99. Another similar app is called TOUCH GOAL but it’s a bit more expensive (3.99) Both have good reviews.

There are several productivity apps for writers that let you write on your ipod/iphone. Not sure how easy that would be, but if you work all day and want to get a bit of writing in on your lunch hour or on the bus, it could be handy. Two that looked interesting were WRITERS TOOLKIT and WRITEROOM.

For outlining a story, there are a couple of options as well. OUTLINER is for any project, from plotting a story to planning backyard renovations ($4.99.)

For $6.99, you can get an app called PROJECTS. It’s like a to do list, calendar, outliner all in one. You can break down your plan by chapter, when you want each one done, flag something as a priority. You can also export the charts to PDF if you want to print them out. I think it would be more of a procrastination excuse than anything else, but some might not agree. Another similar app is called SMARTPLANS LITE (and it’s free!)...

There are also a few story generators for when you’ve got writer’s block. Storyteller (1.99) Writer’s Block Assassine (3.99)

There’s also SCREENPLAY (7.99) A well reviewed fully mobile screenplay writing app that looks cool. I sometimes like to outline in screenplay format especially when I have some dialogue snippits in my head that I’m likely to forget before I get to actual writing. It might be helpful for plotting since it breaks everything down by scene. There are several other similar programs.

So, anyway, that was my research for this morning. I have only tried the Nanowrimo monster one, so I have no clue how well any of these perform. If I could I’d try them all and offer reviews, but alas, I don’t have an ipod touch, and my hubby gets annoyed when I keep borrowing his.

Why Bother?

I recently did my taxes and as usual it was a depressing and painful reminder that writing is hard. Not only is it hard to get words onto paper (or the word processor) when you’ve got all the distractions of everyday life, but then there’s all the stuff that leads to submitting, selling, editing and finally releasing a book.

And at the end of the year, you look at your combined income and thing, why the heck did I bother with all that work? Bad enough that the husband teases you about the little royalty checks (you gonna buy yourself a bag of chips with all the money you earned?) but when tax time comes, he’s suddenly indignant that you earned anything at all, because filing as a couple means my income reduces his tax return.

Now, logically, I made more than he would have gotten back if I hadn’t earned anything at all, but since it come in through the year in dribbles and drabbles, it doesn’t really feel like much of a contribution. Still, it left me wondering if maybe I should work really hard to make a lot of money, or if I should stop completely.

As a stay at home mother, my goal was to make enough to make it more viable for me to remain at home as a full time writer once both kids were in school...I have about 3 months before the youngest is out of SK and then the summer before he starts grade 1. I can tell you right now, I won’t be making enough by then, but because of the economy at the moment, chances are I wouldn’t be able to get a job in the fall anyway. Nobody seems to be having much luck, so that buys me a bit of time.

Let’s say I need to earn the equivalent of minimum wage, part time hours, or about 18-24K a year. Let’s break that down and see how the numbers look.

18-24K a year works out to $1500 - 2000 a month
average royalties for a book that is of medium length is about $1.70 per copy
that’s 882-1176 individual sales a month (looking at current royalty statements and crying)

That’s of all books available for sale. Lets say you have 5 books out, that’s 300-500 copies sold of each per month. Not very realistic no matter how much you promote.

For ten books available you’d have to sell 150-200 copies of each per month, which is less daunting, but not very realistic either.

20 releases equates to 75-100 of each a month.

The thing is, it’s all well and good to look at the numbers and say, “Okay if I have thirty books out, I could make it work.” but the publishing business doesn’t work like that. Usually on the release month you sell tons, because your book is visible to customers right away when they go to the publishers website. Once your release month is over, it might go to the “recently released” section lower on that page for a month, but then people will have to browse and chose your book from hundreds of other titles. Sales plummet. It’s up to you to keep your book in the publics eye, and that is not an easy task. Very little promotion works well enough to justify the time involved. You can do chats and throw excerpts all over the place, but it very rarely does much in regards to sales.

The best thing to do is keep releasing new books, keep yourself visible in groups and blog (I know, I’m so bad at this...it’s like a killer telling someone to be good)

Point is, writing is hard, and making it a career is even harder. It may be easier to get published in the epub world, but you don’t get the same kind of sales you might get in print, and you have to do the promo yourself for the most part. Is it worth it? Well, I still say I’d rather be home writing than working a minimum wage job wearing a tacky uniform all day.

Happy Birthday

Holy crap, it’s been almost a year since I updated. Not that much has happened...not much writing, mostly just doing stuff with the kids.

With another birthday arriving, I’ve realized that I need to get my butt in gear. To that end, I’ve been setting up an office in a room other than the living room...hard to write sex with two kiddies reading over my shoulder, especially now that they are becoming very good readers.

Anyway, this is also a test of a new blogging program I got called MacJournal that lets me do all my blogs from one program without a lot of messing around. All the big goals I set for myself on New Years day are shot to hell because I flaked out and spent too much time procrastinating (again.)

Now, with two releases coming out, it's time to think about promotion again. *gag*

I've never found much results from doing promotion, maybe because I'm not doing it right, or because I'm not the pushy sort. I get all squirmy in my stomach at the thought of posting excerpts all over every yahoo group in existence. I always find I skip over them when I see them on my normal chat groups anyway. Same with live chats. Usually there are a few other authors being hosted, and I'm always the one hiding in the back, hoping time runs out before it's my turn.

Being shy when talking to people face to face is one thing, but this is a little silly.

After reading an article in Writer's Digest on online promotion, I got thinking about blog tours. Sounded interesting. So I thought about it, and realized it probably wouldn't work. The point is to hunt down blogs that deal with topics related to your book...Something Sweet is about maple syrup, so that wouldn't be hard to find blogs on...but would any of those bloggers want to be part of promoting a m/m romance story? I'm thinking, probably not. I'm sure the idea must work well for those who don't write the naughtier stuff (in which case, I'll keep it in mind for other books.)

Anyway, I'm off to work on Xander's Extreme. I reread the introduction to Brodie Miller, my snowboarder who's a bit of a man whore (though he likes to refer to it as living life to the fullest) and that whole scene is dumb. Totally need to redo it.

Edits for both Brazen's Army and Something Sweet will probably be arriving soon. I was totally sure both publishers would have more lag time before I got added to the cue, but it looks like that won't be true.

I'm working on a new WIP called Xander's Extreme Survival Guide, about a young man who stars on a reality tv show where he's forced to survive in remote locations. The other hero is Brodie, a snowboard champion who has a bit of an obsession with Xander and doesn't realize that they'd met before, and that Xander was one of the many faceless men and women to grace his bed. Brodie plans to seduce Xander, but Xander has other ideas...like maybe a little revenge.

Anyway, I'm having a lot of fun with this pair, and even though I'm barely 3K into it, I'm excited about how well it's coming along.

I'll be sure to post ASAP if I get release dates for Brazen and Something Sweet.

Well, my legs are trembling in the wake of too much Wii fit (who the heck thought it would be a good idea to do a ten minute run with no bra on?)

Anyway! I've been neglecting my blog duties. In november, Red Rose Publishing accepted Something Sweet, my first m/m romance, then a few weeks ago, Loose-ID accepted Brazen's Army, a post-apocalyptic m/m romance. Weird, but very cool.

This January, a few of us will be doing a motivational/challenge thing on Bianca's blog. I'm so in the need of some serious arse kicking, so I'm really looking forward to it. I've been working on my 2009 goal list, hoping I'll do better than I did this year.

So! It's been a year since I posted? How freaking pathetic is that? In my defense, I think I was suffering depression or something. I literally haven't written anything in a year.

The whole spring thing has me encouraged though. It was a horrid winter with way more snow than we usually get and just to make things fun, the city workers were on strike so we had no plows running. Thankfully, almost all the snow is gone now, which has me pulling out all my camping books and hanging out in the camping goods aisle.

What I want this year is a GPS unit. I really want to take the kids out geo caching and stuff. It's become sort of a pattern for me to do a few stories a year that involve the outdoors, camping or canoeing etc, and in five days I have a release from Whiskey Creek Torrid that includes a short story with a professional snowboarder (Epic Turns). The second story in the book is called Dark Memories and involves vampires and Mounties *grin*

Will be back way sooner than a year, I promise!

So much for spring! I'll have to see what I can do about that.

Anyway, next up is the sequel to Blood Bonds.

BLOOD BONDS COVER

Here we go, got it to work.

Yikes am I bad at this!

Well, Blood Bonds will be released this Saturday apparently.
